Kibber - The land of Snow, Silence & the Ghost Cat

 Far away from city life, up in the cold desert of Spiti Valley, lies a quiet little village called Kibber - home to one of India's highest wildlife sanctuaries. Its a place known not for crowds or comforts, but for something far more powerful - the rare and beautiful snow leopard. 

My journey to Kibber was one of the most challenging, yet rewarding experiences of my life. It tested my physical limits, stretched my patience and filled my heart with wonder. 

The Journey is Just the Beginning
Reaching Kibber is not easy. The drives are long - sometimes 10-12 hours a day - over winding, icy roads, steep climbs and remote villages. But every turn offers views that take your breath away - snow draped mountains, frozen river, prayer flags fluttering in the wind. 

By the time you reach Kibber, you already feel a shift. The noise of everyday life is left behind. What you find here is vast white silence, starry skies and pure stillness. 

Looking for the Ghost - The Snow Leopard
The snow leopard is one of the most elusive big cats in the world. Locals call it the Ghost of the Mountains - and rightly so. Its ability to blend into the landscape and move silently is unbelievable.

Days in Kibber start early. The trackers are out in the vast expanse, scanning every ridge and rocky outcrop, hoping to catch a sign of the elusive snow leopard. We wait for them to update us about the snow leopard. And when it happens — when you finally spot a snow leopard walking across a cliff or sitting quietly on a ridge — you forget the cold, the tiredness, everything. It’s a moment that takes your breath away. You feel lucky just to be in its presence.

The Power of Good Company.
One of the best parts of the trip was travelling with friends. In a place like Kibber, where conditions are tough, the support and energy of your companions matter so much. We helped each other, laughed through frozen fingers, and celebrated the tiniest wins — like warm food, sunshine, or a rare sighting.

Being together in that wild, white world creates a bond that’s hard to explain. It reminds you that shared experiences make the journey richer.

More than a Wildlife Destination.
Yes, Kibber is about snow leopards — but it’s also about something deeper.

It’s about experiencing the wild in its purest form. It’s about feeling small and amazed at the same time. It’s about learning that you don’t need noise, luxury, or speed to feel alive. Sometimes, all you need is a mountain, a silent trail, and a little faith.

Even if you don’t spot a snow leopard, you come back with something more valuable — a sense of peace, perspective, and quiet strength.

Kibber is not just a place — it’s an experience. It humbles you, heals you, and changes the way you see the world.

If you’re someone who craves nature, stillness, and a little adventure, then Kibber will welcome you with open arms — and snow-covered silence.

You’ll return with frozen toes, tired eyes, and a heart full of stories.

ODKF - A Colorbomb Jewel!

  The Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher is a stunning bird to have on your bucket list! Its vibrant colours and petite size make it a real gem for birdswatchers.  ODKF or Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher is one of the smallest kingfishers. It is only slightly larger than a medium sized humming bird and measures 12.5cam to 14cm in length, that includes the bill and tail. This tropical kingfisher is a partial migrant and is found in the western ghats and Konkan Region, especially during the monsoons, when its their breeding season.  It is a very colourful and attractive bird, with a coral-red bill, orange head, blue-black forehead and blue and white patches on the side of the neck. It has a dark blue back and wings, a white chin and throat and yellow orange underparts. Great Indian Bustard (GIB) - Godawan

 Birds are indicators of the environment, if they are in trouble, we know we'll soon be in trouble! The Great Indian Bustard, a species of bird in India is on a brink of extinction, with only 150 individuals remaining. Found mostly in Rajasthan, it is one of the heaviest flying birds in the word. After been poached for several years, many acts and projects are in place today, protecting and conserving the lives of the few remaining  birds that may soon cease to exist.  The Great Indian Bustard was initially considered to be chosen as the national bird of the country. However, on account of the chance of it being misspelt or confused for a foul word, it was taken out of the running and replaced by the peacock.  During our recent trip to Desert National Park, in the midst of the exhaustive area a flock of 7-8 graceful birds scurred along at a distance.
