Chhota Matka: Lineage, Legacy & the Shifting Throne of Tadoba

In late 2016, deep inside the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, a young tiger cub was born. He was named Chhota Matka, son of the mighty Matkasur and the famous tigress Choti Tara. From his parents, he inherited strength, courage, and the bloodline of legends.

His brother, Tara Chand, did not survive, but Chhota Matka grew into a strong and dominant tiger. Over time, he became the ruler of a prized territory and fathered cubs like Nayantara and Chandni, who carry his legacy forward.

A Fighter from the Start

Chhota Matka’s journey from a young sub-adult to a territorial male was not without bloodshed. In 2021, he faced one of his most defining moments — a brutal territorial battle with Mowgli, another powerful male. The fight was fierce. Many thought Chhota Matka would not survive, but he did. Not only did he endure, he reclaimed his land, earning the respect of both rivals and watchers.

From then on, his reputation as a battle-hardened survivor spread. He was a ruler who had both strength and courage — qualities essential to hold onto a territory rich in prey, water, and tigresses.

The Beginning of the Decline

But life in the wild is never easy. In October 2024, after a fight with Bajrang, his left foreleg was badly injured. Even before that, in September, signs of damage were visible — his leg looked dislocated, and videos showed him struggling to walk.

Without treatment, the injury worsened. Yet, he kept defending his land and facing rivals, even while his health slowly declined.

The Deadly Battle with Brahma

In May 2025, Chhota Matka fought T-158 (Brahma). The fight ended with Brahma’s death, but left Chhota Matka with severe wounds — on his face, leg, and paw. This time, the injuries were too much.

He could no longer hunt properly and began wandering near villages, hungry and weak. By August, vets found fractures, swelling, and maggot-filled wounds. On August 27, he was tranquilised and shifted for treatment, later moved to Gorewada Rescue Centre in Nagpur.

A Grim Reality

By September 2025, experts said his condition was very poor:

Broken canines
A fractured forelimb
Damaged nails

It became clear that a return to the wild was almost impossible. A tiger without strong teeth and legs cannot survive the tough life of hunting and defending territory. Meanwhile, his absence created a vacuum. His once-rich territory was now open, and rivals were already eyeing it.

Who Will Rule Next?

With Chhota Matka out of the picture, Tadoba’s tiger politics is heating up:

Mowgli
– scarred and experienced, likely to make his move.
Veerbhadra – ambitious and powerful, waiting for the right chance.
Bali – patient and clever, waiting for others to tire.
Trishul – young and bold, but still untested.

The coming months will reveal who takes over Chhota Matka’s throne.

Remembering Chhota Matka

Chhota Matka will always be remembered as a fighter — a tiger who rose from his legendary bloodline, ruled with pride, and never gave up even when injured. His journey shows how thin the line is between strength and struggle in the wild.

Though he may not return to his kingdom, his story will live on in Tadoba’s forests — and in the roars of his cubs who carry his legacy forward.
